Find The Right Treatment for Your Reflux

If you’re constantly struggling with chronic reflux, you know that every day is plagued with discomfort.

Over-the-counter and at-home remedies have failed to make a difference. From burning sensations and chest pain to hoarseness, coughing, and regurgitating stomach contents – these unpleasant symptoms can take a toll on your quality of life. But we can help.

For patients struggling with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or LPR (laryngopharyngeal reflux), our treatment options – including prescriptions medication, the minimally invasive TIF procedure, or even weight loss surgery – can bring the relief they’ve been desperately searching for.

Scheduling a consultation is the first step.

Types of Reflux

Most people think of classic symptoms when they hear the word “reflux” – things like heartburn, and regurgitating stomach acid. What most people don’t realize is that there are two main types of reflux, and the symptoms can be very different.

What causes acid reflux?

Any type of acid reflux is caused by a malfunction with the valve that connects your esophagus to your stomach. Normally, this valve opens when you swallow and closes again to keep your stomach contents in your stomach. If that valve becomes weak or too relaxed, it can allow stomach acid or even food particles to pass through. These acids then travel up your esophagus and cause various symptoms, including the notorious burning sensation.

What is GERD?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is also referred to as chronic acid reflux. This is when stomach acid travels back up your esophagus, causing a burning sensation (heartburn). It can be triggered by certain foods or by lying down too soon after you eat. It’s normal to experience occasional acid reflux, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter medication. But if you have chronic acid reflux – at least twice a week for several consecutive weeks – you may need a more substantial treatment. If left untreated, GERD can cause significant damage to your esophagus.

Symptoms of GERD

GERD produces the most common symptoms of reflux, including:
  • Burning sensation in the chest (a.k.a. heartburn)
  • Food or stomach acid backing up into the throat
  • Non-cardiac chest pain

What is LPR?

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is much less common than GERD. This condition happens when stomach acid creeps all the way up the esophagus, through the vocal cords, and into the throat.

Patients experiencing LPR oftentimes don’t realize that their symptoms are caused by reflux. In fact, many patients with LPR don’t experience traditional reflux symptoms like heartburn.

Symptoms of LPR

LPR symptoms affect the upper esophagus, voice box, and throat. Here are some common symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux:
  • Hoarse throat
  • Voice sounding lower
  • Feeling of a lump in the throat
