Why is biliopancreatic diversion used?
BPD is just one of the many surgical and nonsurgical treatment options we offer at the Weight Loss and Wellness Center. Biliopancreatic diversion is often recommended not only to help a patient lose weight but also to combat the following weight-related health issues:
What is biliopancreatic diversion (BPD)?
Biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) is a medical weight loss surgery that removes a portion of the stomach and then attaches the new, smaller stomach pouch with a section of the small intestine. Because the stomach is smaller, it holds less food and bypasses much of the small intestine, where calories are absorbed.
This results in a lower calorie intake, smaller portions, and a longer “full” feeling. This helps our patients at the Weight Loss and Wellness Center to lose weight long-term and meet their overall health goals.

What does biliopancreatic diversion involve?
Prior to undergoing biliopancreatic diversion with our surgeons, we will meet with you to discuss all of your treatment options and any questions or concerns you may have about the procedure.
During the BPD weight loss surgery, your doctor will reduce the size of your stomach pouch by removing a section and using a small stapling device to close up the area. Then, your weight loss doctor will remove the unused portion of your stomach, leaving a smaller stomach pouch. This pouch is then surgically attached to the small intestine to allow for regular food digestion.
After your surgery is complete, your doctor will walk you through your recovery phase and discuss exactly what you can expect in the following weeks and any modifications you’ll need to make to your diet or regular routine. Your physician might also recommend one or more of the following additional treatment options to supplement your weight loss surgery:
