What is sleeve gastrectomy?

A sleeve gastrectomy is a medical weight loss surgery that reduces the size of your stomach. There are three main types of gastrectomy:
- Partial gastrectomy – a certain portion of the stomach is removed
- Full gastrectomy – the full stomach is removed
- Sleeve gastrectomy – the left side of the stomach is removed
During the sleeve gastrectomy for weight loss, the stomach is stapled and the remaining area is removed, leaving a smaller stomach size that limits the amount of food you can eat at one time. In turn, a sleeve gastrectomy helps patients lose weight and keep it off long-term. What does sleeve gastrectomy involve?
At the Weight Loss and Wellness Center, we take the time to explain the entire gastrectomy procedure to each of our patients. We are dedicated to ensuring that you are comfortable and confident with the knowledge and support that you need before, during and after your sleeve gastrectomy surgery.
During the sleeve gastrectomy procedure, your surgeon will remove a small, vertical portion of the stomach that resembles a sleeve and is about the size and shape of a banana. Using a stapling device, the remaining portion of your stomach is closed off.
After your procedure, your physician will spend time walking you through the different lifestyle changes that you’ll need to adapt to the new size of your stomach.
