“Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”
– Theodore Roosevelt
This quote resonated with me as a young medical student. It embodies my values. I included it in my personal statement when I applied for General Surgery residency in 2003. Since then, I have grown to appreciate the significance of these words even more. As a practicing bariatric surgeon, President of my practice, the Weight Loss and Wellness Center, past director of 2 successful bariatric programs and a mother of 3, time has a different meaning now. Working hard at work worth doing is more critical than ever before. I consider the role in the ASMBS Foundation to be just that.
The ASMBS is larger and bigger than just a society for me. It embodies the spirit, vision and values that made me excited about becoming a bariatric surgeon; the privilege to help people fight against obesity and it’s metabolic disorders. The life changing impact this tool provides to our patients is inspiring, humbling and exciting, all at the same time.
We did not get here over night. I am extremely grateful to the smart and hardworking surgeons who founded this society and paved the way for many like myself to learn, discover and empower ourselves and those around us. The torch must carry on and the ASMBS foundation plays a critical role enabling the ASMBS to do so. The mission for research and education, access to care and awareness are all pillars on which the ASMBS will continue to grow, expand and touch many more lives across the world. It will be an honor for me to contribute and to work towards enhancing its mission.
Right out of fellowship I had the opportunity to start a brand new metabolic and bariatric center and service line in an inner-city teaching hospital in Newark, NJ. I learnt firsthand the role that access to care and awareness can play in enabling us to provide what we know is best for our patients and community. Working together with other medical and non-medical colleagues to build bridges and center of excellence requires determination, perseverance and belief in something bigger than yourself. I feel strongly that these qualities that I possess will be a strong asset to the Foundations mission.
